A brief history

The course of Geriatrics and Gerontology was founded within the Faculty of Continuing Medical and Pharmaceutical Education in 01.01.2009 by decision of the Scientific Council of the State Medical and Pharmaceutical University “Nicolae Testemiteanu”, order No. 10 from 10.12.2008 in accordance with the order of the Ministry of Health No.469 from 25.12.2007 “Regarding the foundation of the National Center of Geriatrics and Gerontology”. The course is also a subdivision of the National Center of Geriatrics and Gerontology, for university and postgraduate studies in the field of Geriatrics and Gerontology, for training of licensed geriatricians for the needs of the geriatric system from Republic of Moldova.

At the Course of Geriatrics and Gerontology are trained both  6th  year students, Faculty of Medicine 1 and 2, within a period  of 5 days module as well as  3rd year residents, Family Medicine specialty ,for a period of 10 days. The course provides the opportunity for medical practitioners from different specializations training in Geriatrics and Gerontology at 7 cycles of thematically development in several areas of Clinical Geriatrics.

The Chief Course of Geriatrics and Gerontology is Anatolie Nagara, PhD, Professor associate, Chief of The National Center of Geriatrics and Gerontology.

Team members of the Course of Geriatrics and Gerontology, regarding to the activity of 4 years  of the National Center of Geriatrics and Gerontology, have organized and held the Ist International Conference in Geriatrics at 21.09.2012 with the participation of delegates from France, the Netherlands, Romania, Israel. The same year was published the first book on Geriatrics from the Republic of Moldova.

Collaborators of the Course of Geriatrics and Gerontology are working within the institutional project entitled: ’’Peculiarities of the cardiovascular disease in correlation with major geriatric syndromes in the elderly’’.

The research directions of the Course of Geriatrics and Gerontology are:

  1. Study of the epidemiology, the way of occurrence, the clinical peculiarities and treatment’s particularity of the isolated systolic hypertension in the elderly.
  1. Study of epidemiological peculiarities and of risk factors of the systolic and diastolic heart failure in correlation with major geriatric syndromes in the elderly.
  2. Study of the particularities of cardiovascular pathology in the elderly in correlation with major geriatric syndromes and the role of therapy with diuretics, angiotensin-converting inhibitors, cardiac glycosides, beta blockers, nitrates and vascular medications.
  3. Study of the cardiovascular pathology in correlation with commonly seen polypathology in the elderly.
